Light Series 1 entry 8

Wednesday, April 30th
4:30 p.m.

A month later, around the same time, the sun is still shinning bright and high onto the courtyard of the EUC. This sunlight casts a large amount of shadows but still enters the space and is reflected from the marble flooring. This picture can be compared to January 29th around 1:45 p.m. with a large amount of shadows cast. As the days get longer, the amount of light washed into the space is absorbed and reflected off the various materials.

Light Sketch Series 4 entry 3

HID Lamps; Street lamps

-To provide suitable lighting in a parking lot

-A high power density illuminates a large amount of light into the parking lot to provide a safe and visible area

-The level of luminance is appropriate for this setting because the power density is not too strong to hinder and affect the surrounding homes.

-Recommendations I would suggest would be to have more amount of these lamps distributed around the parking lot. This will provide more light but not affect the surrounding apartments.

Fluorescent Lamps; Gatewood Studio Arts Building

-To gather as a class and student body to perform various projects, assignments, meetings

-To provide an ambient luminance for a large gathering space

-Large Fluorescent lamps hung from the very tall ceiling will wash the gathering space with even distribution of light

-Fluorescent track lighting is provided on a lower height to allow projects, drawings, art to be washed with light directly

-This white light as well with the mixture of daylight reflect a cool, even color distribution that provides true color

-This level of illumination is necessary for cloudy days and dark nights but the daylight provides a large amount of light to perform tasks in this space

-I believe the lighting quality in this space is very efficient for the tasks performed here. Motion sensors should be provided to cut off illumination intensity during the day time, which can maximize efficiency.

Incandescent Residential Living Room

-Relaxing setting used as a gathering space, informal lounge place

-Illuminate various project tasks, accent lighting for aesthetics

-Tall floor lamp illuminates upwards and washes two walls. Another table lamp may be used for additional lighting diffusion

-This upwards light is washed on both walls and reflected to illuminate the whole space

-This incandescent lamp source may be perceived as a more yellowish color tone.

-The appropriateness of the illumination level is suitable for this space needs. Detail tasks are not performed here, but a more conversational, gather space may allow less illumination level.

-My recommendations for the improving of the lighting environment would be to add more layers of lighting in this one space. This will provide a more dynamic space and will allow more detail tasks to be performed with more intense lighting.

Incandescent lamps provide a soft glow throughout the space. The wall sconces give an intimate setting providing little task light.

Residence

Natural lighting from a window casts a soft shadow onto all of the fabrics, highlighting their true properties. You can sense the touch of the silk and suede as you might not be able to tell under artificial light.

Harris Teeter Grocery Store

Incandescent light source gives a direct light onto table surfaces.

The footcandle amount may be high as the distance between the lamp and the fabric is small. With this direct light source from above, it is difficult to distinguish the different textures in the fabric.

Printworks Bistro
Proximity Hotel

This restaurant sits on the southwest corner, with all glass windows, allowing lots of sunlight to wash into the space. This benefits the space by not relying on a lot of artificial lighting. The lamps used allow a glow to diffuse in the space and not directly hit any one table. This lighting creates a even hierarchy of importance as well as casual, comfortable setting.

Weatherspoon Art Gallery

Direct lighting is used in each gallery space to highlight artwork. This track lighting is intense lighting that gives a contrast to the rest of the space.

Throughout the hallway there are diffused wall sconces that do not provide that much light in the daytime, as the ceiling skylights light the whole hallway space.

Stone Lobby

The Stone Lobby is made up with very reflective materials such as marble flooring, metal framing and glass windows. With these materials, as the sun shines perfectly into the space, a great glare from the floor may hidder your sight as you enter the space. To minimize this, I would suggest to lay a type of mat on the floor to block this entry glare.

[Expressive Light]
We looked to the chapel in Ronchamp for inspiration. Diffusion of light, layers creating space and separation creating light were used in both Ronchamp and our model. The separation distance of 'walls' gives the idea of what kind of space it may be. The larger openings creates a bigger gathering space and invites large groups, as the smaller openings on the east side would be too narrow for any circulation. The only entry would be through the large space towards the back to the intimate space. With the morning sun penetrating the east wall and through the narrow slits, a diffusion of light penetrates the meditation space, creating an intimate feel. As the sun sets on the west, the light washing through the large gathering space creating direct light.

Afternoon shine

Thursday, January 31, 2:00 p.m.

The afternoon sun was high and shining through the ceiling atrium windows casting sun rays onto the wall. This contrasted dark shadows on the wall and onto the floor. This sunshine did not give a glare because it was high enough out of an individual's eye sight.

this photo is from a restaurant, obsidian, i went to in manchester, england. the over all feel of this restaurant was cool and classy. they achieved this feel with different colors of light in the ceiling, wall and floor. the small vertical slots gave only a glimpse of glow while the opposite wall was hung with red fabric and direct light downwards. this picture gives the feel of the space, dark, intimate and cool. although in other parts of the room may feel more open and cool with other cool lights.

Light Graffiti

i found this picture on a person's blog and they described using glow-sticks, flashlights along with time-lapse photography to create long streams of light. this type of graffiti would be difficult to reproduced using spray paint to achieve the same affect as the light beams.
